Educational Objective: Acquiring scientific knowledge and enable critical thinking about: traditional and contemporary approaches to security concepts, practice, studying and research; the necessity of spreading traditional research field of security under contemporarygeopolitical conditions; the cause-and-effect relationship between security and other social phenomena (freedom, peace, well-being, power, war, conflicts, political violence, crises); current theories and trends in the development of security studies.

Projected Outcome: Competency for independent engagement in scientific and research activities in the field of security; ability to detectchange in the contemporary security environment and solve security problems by using scientific methods; ability to follow the achievements in the study of the phenomenon of security; ability to design individual parts of national security strategy and policy of the Republic of Serbia;ability to participate in scientific conferences and to publicate scientific papers.

Course Contents/Structure

Theoretical education: Cognitive outcomes, conceptual problems and historical context of security development; Methodological sources of security studies; Concepts of security: traditional (national and international security: collective security and balance of power) and contemporary (individual, social and regional security); Global and human security; Cooperative security; Protection policies of national and international interests and values ​​in the era of global geopolitical changes; Broadening of the traditional research field of security and the contemporary security environment; Contemporary challenges and threats to security (organized crime, religious and national extremism, terrorism, armed conflicts, violence, environmental threats, illegal migration and trafficking, intelligence subversion, economic threats); Traditional theoretical approaches to security (realism/neorealism, liberal institutionalism, democratic peace theory); Modern theoretical approaches to security (social constructivism, peace studies, postmodernism, poststructuralism, critical theories); Conceptual frameworks for energy, economic, ecological, political and normative security; Security and sustainable development; Organizational frameworks for security practices at different levels; National security systems, Non-State Security Sector; Policies, strategies and security culture; Trends in development of security studies.

Practical training: Critical analysis of regulative acts in the field of security; conducting independent research of security threats;writing the literature review of reference foreign literature covering the field of security.

Teaching Methods: lecture, critical discussions, presentation, consultations.
