Purpose of the Curriculum

The purpose of the curriculum includes: education of personnel capable of independent performance of original and science-relevant research, which enables development of new technologies and procedures contributing to the general development of a society; education of personnel capable of critical evaluation of both their own research work and the research work of others; education of personnel capable of high-quality participation in team research; adequate education which provides students with further scientific improvement; development of computer sciences in Serbia, which would stimulate the development of science and society as a whole, as well as to becoming a part of contemporary scientific flows in the world.

All the above mentioned purposes are related to specific quality of the University, which has educated, educates and will educate the personnel for the needs of the Ministry of Interior and security services of the Republic of Serbia in the field of criminal investigation, security and policing, which is also reflected in the content of the curriculum.

The University of Criminal Investigation in Belgrade has defined, within its Strategy of Quality, the main tasks and goals, with which the purposes of this curriculum have been fully harmonized.

 

Objectives of Curriculum

The objectives of the curriculum are: to achieve scientific competences and academic skills which allow for independent scientific and research work, as well as to teach at universities and schools of higher education; to make students capable of accomplishing and applying original scientific achievements, both in computer and other related sciences; to make students capable of using expert and scientific literature and contemporary information-communication technologies in acquiring knowledge in the field of computer and other related sciences; development of creative capabilities and practical skills required for further career development; developing awareness of the significance of developing scientific youth and making students capable of active participation in this development; developing student awareness of the necessity of permanent education, development of a society as a whole and protection of the environment; providing academic education which gets beyond a narrow expert framework and developing awareness of contemporary society’s values.

There is a clear direction of development of the personnel of the University of Criminal Investigation and Police Studies towards training necessary personnel, primarily for the police and security services of the Republic of Serbia, but also for other government and private organizations which deal with security, the personnel which will be capable of dealing with security in general and the security in cyber space in particular, starting from safety and security of data to crime and terrorism within it and related to it, which is achieved by specific curriculum contents and the courses within it.

The University of Criminal Investigation and Police Studies in Belgrade has defined within its Strategy of Quality the main tasks and goals with which the objectives of the curriculum have been fully harmonized.

 

Competences of Graduated Students

By completing the curriculum the student acquires the following general competences: capability of thinking logically, formulating hypotheses, making conclusions in a formal and formalized manner; capability to organize and implement developmental and scientific research; capability to organize and implement both national and international scientific-research projects; capability to communicate at a professional level and to work in a team; capability to present the results of their work and present scientific research results at international scientific conferences; capability to publish scientific results in scientific journals; capability for professional promotion; capability to follow and understand contemporary trends, both in science and society; capability of critical and self-critical thinking and approach, as well as creative and independent action; capability to honour professional ethics; capability of active participation in the development of scientific youth; capability to participate in the development of a scientific discipline  within which the doctoral degree has been acquired, as well as science in general, and thus participate in the development of the entire society.

 

Student Enrolment

The University of Criminal Investigatin and Police Studies, that is, the departments within University organise and perform doctoral studies in accordance with the Law on Higher Education, Accreditation Standards of Curriculums at the doctoral studies, the Rulebook on doctoral studies, the Articles of Association and other General Acts of the University. Doctoral studies last three years and bear at least 180 ECTS, with a previously achieved scope of studies of at least 300 ECTS at undergraduate and MA studies.

Eligible candidates for the first year of doctoral studies should have completed BA academic studies of Information and Technology and MA studies at the University of Criminal Investigation and Police Studies and should have earned at least 300 ECTS with a GPA of at least 8.00 both at BA ad MA level of academic studies. On rare occasions a candidate who has completed undergraduate and/or master academic studies in the field of natural sciences and technical-technological sciences at another higher education institute and has achieved at least 300 ECTS and a GPA of at least 8.00 both at the BA and MA level of academic studies is eligible for doctoral studies in Information Technology provided that they pass certain exams in the field of natural sciences determined by the Commission appointed by the rector of the University.

On rare occasions a candidate who has acquired their higher education at another higher education institute in the field of natural sciences and technical-technological sciences according to the regulations that were effective till the day the Law on Higher Education came into effect by completing undergraduate studies which last at least eight semesters, with a GPA of 8 provided that they pass certain exams in the field of natural sciences determined by the Commission appointed by the rector of the University.

It is necessary that the candidate who meets the abovementioned prerequisites know one world language, and the University determines the type of knowledge at the call for doctoral studies enrolment, as well as the way of testing the knowledge of a foreign language.

Students are accepted at doctoral studies based on the call announced by the University.

The call contains: the number of students being enrolled, enrolment prerequisites, the procedure of the call implementation, the criteria for determining the order of candidates, ways and deadlines for submitting a complaint to the determined order as well as the tuition fee.

The Enrolment Commission appointed by the rector of the University carries out the call for enrolment and determines the order of the accepted candidates and announces it.
The order of candidates for the enrolment in the first year of doctoral studies is determined based on the GPA achieved at BA and MA academic studies, and other criteria of importance for the curriculum. The GPA is determined by dividing by two, the sum of GPAs at BA and MA academic studies. The candidate who has met the prerequisites and is placed on the ranking list within the number determined for the enrolment is entitled to enrolment.

If the candidate who is entitled to enrolment does not enrol within the deadline stipulated by the call, they will be substituted by the next in line candidate who meets these prerequisites.

The University concludes a contract with the eligible candidates stipulating the mutual rights and obligations.
