Educational Objective: The course introduces students to scientific research work and the methodology of scientific research work through discussions about the open scientific problems within the sphere of students' scientific interests. The postgraduates have to write a research paper in which they explicate theoretical bases of their future doctoral thesis. The paper is a candidate's qualifying examination for the doctoral dissertation.

Projected Outcome:

By solving open scientific problems with regard to the scientific research work, students:

  • will develop their competencies for using scientific research methods;

  • will develop their own methods of scientific research;

  • will obtain new original scientific results.

Course Contents/Structure

Course contents is designed for the needs of research work of each candidate. The mentor designs the programme and a list of literature for each candidate. The purpose of this examination is to enable the students to show that they fully understand the subject of the future doctoral thesis. Students have to demonstrate that they have mastered the subject and that they can successfully connect results from the relevant scientific field and that they understand what open scientific problems are. The student has to write one research paper and defend it before a three-member committee. The research paper topic must include open scientific problems to be solved by the student in the course of writing the paper. Guided by the teacher, students critically analyze selected problems by using some of the recognized methodologies or by developing their own methodology for problem-solving.

Teaching Methods: A student solves open scientific problems relating to the research paper topic constantly guided by the mentor and writes a research paper which is presented - defended before the committee.
