Educational Objective: Understanding the molecular structure of polymers, the synthesis processes, and the properties and application of the most important industrial polymers. Familiarization with the fundamental properties of polymeric materials emphasizing the types of polymeric fibers used for the production of protective fabrics (clothing) and equipment.

Learning Outcomes: The students gained thefundamental knowledge in the field of polymeric materials and their physical and chemical properties, as well as synthesis and modifications of natural and synthetic polymers that allow them to monitor the development of new polymeric materials, their processing and application. The students became familiar with the basic means of protection as well as modern polymer fibers and their application.

Course Overview

Lecture: Basic concepts, classification, definitions, types and development of polymeric materials. Primary and secondary structure of polymeric materials. Chemical characteristics of polymeric materials (density, viscosity, degree of swelling, degree of cross-linking, refractive index, electrical properties). Physical characteristics of polymeric materials (mass, elastic properties, linear structure, material strength, mechanical, thermal, optical, electrical and magnetic properties). Biological characteristics polymeric materials (DNA structures, allergens, etc.). Polymer fibers (polyethylene fibers, aramid fibers, Kevlar). Composite materials. Practical application of polymeric materials, primarily polymeric fibers and composites for production of protective clothing and equipment.

Practical (Laboratory) Training: Polymer identification. Density measurements. Viscosity measurements. Thickness determination. Swelling measurement. Theories of gelation. Mechanical characteristics (elasticity). Synthesis of nylon fibers. Analyzes of individual protective fabrics layers and panels. Thermal treatment of protective panel layers. Preparation of flexible and rigid polyurethane foams. Synthesis of composite material.

Teaching Methods: PowerPoint Presentation, Lecturing, In-class Discussion, Laboratory Training.
