Educational Objective: Acquisition of basic informatics knowledge and skills in the field of identification technologies and systems.

Projected Outcome: The student mastered the knowledge necessary for: understanding, analyzing and evaluating the operation of the authentication system, as well as selecting the most favourable method for a specific application.

Course Contents/Structure

Theoretical education: Introductory considerations: definition of identity and identification, basic division, analysis of the need for fast and reliable identification, pointing to existing solutions and current problems. Review of AIDC (Automatic Identification and Data Capture) technologies: Bar codes, magnetic stripes, WORM, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Smart cards, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Biometric Identification Systems: Overview and Analysis of Available Solutions. Analysis of security aspects and privacy issues. Overview of existing mechanisms for authentication in a network environment. Mutual Authentication, Certification and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). Overview of protocols used for authentication (Kerberos, Radius, etc.).

Practical training: Practical introduction to the authentication solutions implemented in the operating system. Issue and use of keys. Using smart cards. Realization of multifactor authentication. Getting acquainted with specific authentication systems implemented in the MoI RS.

Teaching Methods: Lectures, exercises, laboratory exercises, projects, midterm test, consultations, seminar papers, exams.
